“The defamation Trial Drama: Trump Accused of Unleashing Supporters on Carroll”

In her opening statement on Tuesday, E. Jean Carroll’s attorney, Shawn Crowley, tells the jury in the second defamation trial of former President Donald Trump that his persistent denials of her allegations that he sexually assaulted her in a department store changing room in the 1990s “unleashed his followers to go after her.” “It has been determined already that Mr. Trump did sexually assault Ms. Carroll,” Judge Lewis Kaplan informs aspiring jurors. Here are the most recent legal events pertaining to the former president who hopes to run for president again in 2024.

During the second civil defamation complaint filed against Trump, Crowley stated in her opening remarks on Tuesday that the former president had “unleashed his followers to go after” Carroll and “threaten her life.”

“During his time as president, Donald Trump attacked Ms. Carroll, humiliated her, and destroyed her reputation using the largest microphone in the world,” Crowley said to the jury in the lawsuit that will determine how much additional money, if any, Trump owes Carroll.

Crowley observed that insulting comments persisted on social media throughout the day even as the former President Donald Trump sat in the courtroom

“How much money will it take to make him stop?” Crowley questioned the jurors. “He kept up those very same lies even after a federal jury sat in this courtroom and unanimously found that he sexually assaulted her and defamed her.”

Messages claimed to Trump on his Truth Social account on Tuesday morning described Carroll’s claim that he had raped her in a department store changing room in the mid-1990s as “fabricated” and a “attempted extortion”(plot to extort), according to the Associated Press.

According to Habba, the evidence in the case would demonstrate that Carroll’s reputation was not damaged by Trump and that she went on to have successful career in the aftermath of the alleged attack.

Carroll, who received a $5 million jury victory in May, is suing Trump for defamatory remarks he made about him in 2019 and is requesting an additional $10 million in compensatory damages in addition to millions more in punitive damages.

Before the opening remarks on Tuesday, Trump departed the courtroom. Though it is anticipated that arguments will complete this week, the judge has consented to enable him to testify on Monday in the case.

During Tuesday’s jury selection, Kaplan told potential jurors in the civil lawsuit that Trump was not going to reopen the issue of whether or not he had sexually assaulted Carroll in the mid-1990s in a New York department store changing room, ABC News reported.

“Mr. Trump is liable for defamation, as the court found in a previous decision,” Kaplan stated. “For the purposes of this trial, it has already been established that Mr. Trump did, in fact, sexually assault Ms. Carroll and that, at the time he made these statements about her, he knew they were untrue or carelessly made.”

Before the opening remarks, Trump departed the courtroom and rushed to a political rally in New Hampshire. Carroll’s attorney accused the front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination of using “the world’s biggest microphone” to ruin her name and turn his fans against her. Carroll has never been more well-known, according to Trump’s attorney, and she is holding him responsible for “a few mean tweets from Twitter trolls.”

After winning the Iowa caucuses on Monday, Trump headed to a Manhattan courtroom to begin what made up to the penalty phase of Carroll’s civil lawsuit, which claimed he had attacked her at a department store in 1996. Trump left the courtroom on Tuesday after the nine-member jury was chosen. Throughout the jury selection process, Trump grimaced and glared at times, deftly raising his hand in response to Judge Lewis A. Kaplan’s question about whether anyone thought he had been treated unfairly by the legal system. The gesture elicited laughter from some in the room, and the judge responded, “We know where you stand.”
